Targett paired with fresh co-driver for Queensland Raceway

Oscar Targett will be joined at Queensland Raceway by former Radical Cup racer Justin Tigani, replacing an absent Shane Smollen in a one-off GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS cameo.

Targett heads to Queensland Raceway seventh in the Pro-Am drivers’ standings after a mixed start to the season, with a sole podium in the first race of the year.

While outright results have been up and down, the former Grove Racing junior leads the SRO GT Academy standings, with a chance to drive in the 24 Hours of Spa up for grabs.

Targett is joined by former Radical Cup racer Tigani in place of regular co-driver Smollen, who will be absent with work commitments.

“This weekend it’s just about making sure that I hand the car to Oscar in a good position because the main goal for the whole team is to get him to Spa,” Tigani explained.

“The biggest thing is just making sure that I do my job, keep the car straight, bring it home in a good position so that Oscar’s able to jump in and do what he needs to do to get points for Spa.”

Tigani enters the round with only a single test day at Queensland Raceway under his belt, having never raced at the circuit or in a GT3 car.

“The test went really well. We were on the pace straight away, which is what we wanted,” Tigani added.

“We didn’t get a lot of dry laps in though. We only got about 20 laps in the dry, but the laps that we did do were pretty competitive.

“I was as close to Oscar as I wanted to be. I was as close as I could be for someone jumping in the car for the first time.

“The test day was the first time I’d done any laps around there, so it was a big day for me.

“I was lucky that Oscar has done a billion laps around there. They put me in the car for as long as possible just because I was learning the track and learning how to drive a GT3 car.

“It’s got more grip, it’s got better brakes, it’s got traction control. So the step itself wasn’t as drastic as I thought it was gonna be,” Tigani said.

“They’re a really good car to drive. You can drive that car at 80 percent all day every day and be comfortable, you won’t fire it off the track, you won’t spin.

“Obviously that last 20 percent is where like the Pro guys push it. The car moves around a little bit and starts to become a bit more on edge.

“As an Am, it’s unbelievable. I don’t think there’s a better car you could jump in, to be honest.”

The Tigani Motorsport outfit enters QR with strong momentum, having swept both races at The Bend.

Jayden Ojeda and Paul Lucchitti sit just two points off Broc Feeney and Brad Schumacher in the championship lead, with QR being a strong circuit for both cars last year.

Quick Kiwi Brendon Leitch returns alongside GTWC’s newest winner in Sergio Pires, as the pair look to continue their march forward in the standings.

Leitch stood on the podium alongside the late Tim Miles at QR in 2024 and ‘25, with ‘The Paperclip’ proving to be a kind venue to the Kiwi.

The Targett/Tigani line-up tweak is one of a few round-on-round changes.

Volante Rosso Motorsport will again field its mixed pair of entries, with team owner Josh Hunt returning in the McLaren 720S GT3 Evo alongside Geoff Emery.

Alex Gardner and Ben Porter step aside for this round, making way for Victorian State Circuit Racing regular Cameron Rees in the Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3.

Team BRM welcomes back regular Pro driver Alex Peroni following a lengthy stint on the sidelines with injury.

Supercars regular Thomas Randle had taken Peroni’s place as a substitute for the opening two rounds, but returns to the broadcast team for a cameo appearance in place of Nick Percat.

Peroni re-joins Mark Rosser at the venue where the pair were victorious in 2025.

15 cars will line up at Queensland Raceway following the cameo appearance of JP Drake and Garnet Patterson at The Bend.

GT World Challenge Australia will run a pair of one-hour races over the weekend, with a public pit walk and signing session preceding Sunday’s on-track action.

All of the weekend’s action can be viewed on Fox Sports and Kayo from 8:15am AEST on Saturday and 10:00am Sunday.
